T. Barnabas Kane for Otwell Associates Architects

This hilltop site featured native pines and Emory oak, plus spectacular views. Barnabas Kane also served as architect for the residence and outbuildings and had a vision of the site as an extension of the natural topography. The general design goal was to use walkways and connectors to frame views of city lights to the north and the Prescott National Forest to the south.

The design creates a habitat enjoyed by plants, animals and residents. Decomposed granite and local Chocolate Flagstone were used on walkways to maintain a feeling of nature and timelessness. Basalt rock uncovered on site was used in retaining walls to naturally blend with the native hillside. In the main courtyard, a water pool features a decorative clay fountain.

Plantings were hydrozoned using native plants including agave, ornamental grasses and flowering shrubs that celebrate the diversity of the high desert. Studded with original Ponderosa Pines, the gardens feature Prickly Pear Cactus, Agave and native ornamental grasses. Native shrubs such as Cliffrose and Smooth Sumac round out the design, and attract local butterflies, moths and wildlife. With the gardens and landscaping, the structures were fully integrated into the vision, bringing the outside indoors.
